Bush House, Index, WA

It was with great trepidation that I recently visited one of my favorite towns, Index, WA. I was concerned because it’s been too long since my last visit and at that time one of my favorite structures the Bush House hotel had been closed and looking like it was in serious need of restoration. So when I pulled into town I was steeled for the worst…

Well, what a wonderful surprise! Not only is the beautiful Bush House hotel still there, it is having a glorious restoration. The owners look to be doing a thorough, sensitive, and historically accurate restoration, that will return this 1898 gem to its productive and  honored place in the community.  Index, WA, USA. Brother Can You Spare a Quoin?

Brother Can You Spare a Quoin?

What’s a Quoin? It’s the square blocks at the corners of the walls. In this example, although they are a decorative interpretation of what was historically a structural element, they lend a feeling of strength and stability. It’s a design device used quite commonly in Italianate houses.  This is an interesting home also because it is unusual to see a more contemporary metal roof on an Italianate house. I feel it lends an attractive fresh  look to the style. Walla Walla, WA, USA, Italianate, 1915

Unusual Side Gabled Hip Roof

Unusual Side Gabled Hip Roof

I like the way the gable on the porch roof echos the gables on both ends of the hip roof of the house. Note  the very “tight” monochromatic color scheme featuring a variety of greens; from the blue-green of the spruce to the aqua green of the lawn chair, to the greens of the home and trim.
