Lairmont Manor was designed in the Italian Renaissance style by architect Carl Gould.  (Carl Gould was also responsible for the wonderful Suzzallo Library on the University of Washington campus.)  Built for Charles Larrabee, it was occupied by the family until 1914. It was then purchased by the Sisters of St Joseph and used by them as Mount Saint Mary’s Novitiate and Provincial House. In 1967 it was purchased by the Douglas family and is now superbly maintained by a nonprofit trusteeship which hosts events. The proceeds go to preserve the manor and enrich the community. Wouldn’t this be a fantastic place to get married? Fairhaven, Bellingham, WA, USA. Carl Gould, Italian Renaissance, 1915

Bold and Brave Colors

Bold and Brave Colors

This fulvous orange is not a color that would work on every home. Here, however, someone is very adept at bringing out the warm excitement of this color without having it become harsh. They are smartly integrating this unusual color by picking it up in the pottery and soothing it by the use of the trim color and touches of blue. Central District, Seattle, WA, USA. Eclectic 1910

Interesting Figurative Art Work

Interesting Figurative Art Work

I am quite a fan of terracotta facades on buildings. I noticed this attractive building, and apparently someone else likes this building also! Someone has glued a number of these small figurative sculptures at  different locations on the building. Is it an art piece or perhaps an homage to the beauty of terracotta? Eclectic Individual Style

Individual Style Implemented With Gusto

Whenever  I am in the area I like to take a look at the progress of this home. The owner has an individual style and has been working consistently to make the home meet his expectations. The  solid grey lends a bit of a sculptural  Louise Nevelson  like feeling. The iron work gives a light gothic filigree look. It will be exciting to see what the owner develops next!
