Bush House, Index, WA

It was with great trepidation that I recently visited one of my favorite towns, Index, WA. I was concerned because it’s been too long since my last visit and at that time one of my favorite structures the Bush House hotel had been closed and looking like it was in serious need of restoration. So when I pulled into town I was steeled for the worst…

Well, what a wonderful surprise! Not only is the beautiful Bush House hotel still there, it is having a glorious restoration. The owners look to be doing a thorough, sensitive, and historically accurate restoration, that will return this 1898 gem to its productive and  honored place in the community.  Index, WA, USA. Horror Vacui

The Victorians often ascribed to a design idea that is  sometimes  unfairly described as “horror vacui” (fear of the empty.) The smart owner of this property is perhaps playing with that idea in their use of a generous amount of embellishments. Regardless, the result is a personal and effective expression of a design concept. Walla Walla, WA, USA. Queen Anne, 1895

Italian Villa

Are you looking at a house and trying to decide if the style is Italianate or Italian Villa?  I understand the dilemma, I have developed this little memory trick to remind myself… if it has a tower to see over the “hill(a)”  it is Italian Villa.  Walla Walla, WA, USA.
