Bold and Brave Colors

Bold and Brave Colors

This fulvous orange is not a color that would work on every home. Here, however, someone is very adept at bringing out the warm excitement of this color without having it become harsh. They are smartly integrating this unusual color by picking it up in the pottery and soothing it by the use of the trim color and touches of blue. Central District, Seattle, WA, USA. Eclectic 1910

Two Story Veranda

Two Story Veranda

Can a structure have personality? Well this one appears to have “joie de vivre.”  The two-story veranda is inviting, what a wonderful place for a morning coffee or a  relaxing glass of wine. The stonework fence is substantial and does a good job delineating the lush garden areas. The paint colors are buoyant. Doesn’t it feel like it would be fun to live here?  Wallingford, Seattle, WA, USA, Eclectic 1910

Samuel Hyde House

Built in 1910 for  Samuel Hyde. This residence was designed by architects Bebb and Mendel. The gardens are said to have been designed by the Olmsted Brothers, which is possible as they were quite active in the area around that time. This structure is currently the residence of the Consul of the Russian Federation. Madison Park, Seattle, WA, USA, Neo-Classical, 1910

Around this time, (after 1905ish)  an interesting thing was happening in Arts and Crafts architecture; the country was developing three strong regional styles. On the east coast the “Shingle”, in the middle of the country “Prairie” and on the west coast “Craftsman”.  Pasadena, CA, USA, The Gamble House, Craftsman, 1910
